My Withdrawal From The Campaign

Authored May 3, 2010 by Michael Johnson

Over the past several months I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support that so many people have shown me as I have campaigned for the Davis School District Board of Education.  Since my decision to run for the school board I have received countless calls, emails, messages and comments of encouragement and support.  Many of you have made or have offered to make contributions of time and money, of endorsements and expertise to help in my effort to be elected.  For that I thank you, each of you.

It has become clear over the past month or so that my message of greater communication and innovation has resonated with the community.  I have enjoyed the support from not only most of the elected officials in the community but also many members of the local community councils, many educators and most importantly many, many parents of Davis County Students.

The trust offered to me has been tremendous.  It has been wonderful to learn of parents concern for their students and to know how important the Board of Education is to ensure that students receive the very best education possible.

However at this time I must withdraw from the campaign.

Opportunities and challenges have presented themselves to my wife and me over the past few months that may require us to move our family out of the district for a time over the next couple of years.  As we pursue new educational endeavors and new career paths it will not likely be possible for us to serve the entire four year term for the office for which I am running.

This news will come as a shock to some who know that I have been planning on this and preparing for this race for years.  Those who know me know how difficult this decision is.  I care deeply for the Davis School District and for the education of our students and would have loved the opportunity to serve over the next four years.  However right now it is very important for me to focus on my family and the educational and career opportunities that will allow me to provide the very best life for my children.

Emily and I do not regret the time and the money that we have put into the campaign thus far, the privilege of meeting and getting to know so many people has been a true joy and pleasure.  We will not soon forget the generosity of all those who have been so supportive to this point.  We hope that you will demonstrate the same kindness as we remove ourselves from the race.

There will be another time for me to serve in public office.  Both Emily and I look forward to that time with great anticipation.  I hope that when that time comes that you will show the same kindness and support that you have during this race.  Until then I hope that we can continue to work together in other capacities to improve and strengthen our community.

May God bless you and bless this wonderful community that we call home.
